The exercise in this video is what led to “Drum Groove Idea #1 Part-1”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6-UgnV_2XM
This whole thing started as an exercise for my students with focus on “2x hands 2x foot” combination mainly to develop stronger, even, comfortable and faster single-foot doubles on the Bass drum. At first it was “RLFF” pattern with hands just on the Snare drum and the right foot on the Bass Drum. Later on I switched hands around every other time creating “RLFF –LRFF” pattern. Great for practicing L-hand lead as well. Then dedicate each hand to a different sound source and you can feel the groove already, but not quite there yet. Well….sounds great but something is still missing ……..Yes…….accents made all the difference. Accent each first hand out of the group and voilà.
The rest is up to you just start moving these patterns around the drum set. I picked Hi-hat and Snare to lay down the main idea. Later on I moved my left hand onto 1st and 2nd Tom.
Be creative and have fun with it.
